The cast of the upcoming national tour of The Color Purple met the press recently before bringing the Tony-winning revival to cities across America. Take a look at the video above as the cast performs the title number and expresses the significance of the story.
Leading the company as Celie is Adrianna Hicks, who understudied the role in the 2015 Broadway revival. “Any piece of art that you do, you have to continue making it fresh and new, and I’m excited to do that,” she said of being given the opportunity to make the role her own full-time.
Carrie Compere and Carla R. Stewart join her on the tour as Sofia and Shug Avery, respectively. The two understudied their respective roles on Broadway as well, and Compere assumed the role of Sofia for the production’s final weeks.
“It’s been such a blessing to be on a Broadway stage and tell this story and see people’s reactions and know that people are leaving uplifted and getting what they need,” Compere said. “To be able to go to people’s homes—to go out to the nation now—and to serve in that way is amazing.”
The tour will begin performances October 7 in Schenectady, New York, prior to celebrating its official opening at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. Visit ColorPurple.com for the complete tour itinerary.
Edelstein will directs a cast of 30, with nearly 1,000 San Diegans participating directly in the milestone production that will mark the completion of the Bard’s canon at the venue.
