Classic Stage Company has postponed its upcoming production of Alice Childress' rarely-seen Wine in the Wilderness.
Directed by Tony winner LaChanze, the production was originally scheduled to begin performances this spring, but will now be produced during CSC's 2024-2025 season at the Lynn F. Angelson Theater.
"We’re so excited about the incredible team that is coming together for Wine in the Wilderness,” shared Producing Artistic Director Jill Rafson in a statement. “Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts have arisen that will prevent the production from taking place this spring, but we look forward to sharing this piece with audiences as part of next season.”
Set against the backdrop of the 1964 Harlem riot on a hot summer night, Wine in the Wilderness follows artist Bill Jameson, whose friends just introduced him to a model for the final piece of his triptych on Black womanhood. But Tomorrow Marie is no mere muse, and she’s about to give Bill much more than he bargained for.
The production will mark the New York directing debut of LaChanze, who was Tony-nominated for her performance in the 2021 revival of Childress' Trouble in Mind.
CSC’s 2023-2024 season included a revival of the Broadway musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale, directed by Trip Cullman, and Fiasco Theater’s production of Shakespeare's Pericles, directed by Ben Steinfeld.
