Chita Rivera will be honored with the Icon Award from the Loukoumi Make a Difference Foundation. The not-for-profit organization aims to encourage children from a young age to perform good deeds and gain an understanding of philanthropy, which helps them build self-esteem and feel pride in themselves and their communities. The Icon Award honors a public figure who stands as an excellent role model for children to follow.
Rivera has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Icon Award as a role model and pioneer of the theatre who has made a true difference in both the arts and the world itself. "The Loukoumi Foundation also sponsors a program called 'Making A Difference Through the Arts,' something that Chita Rivera has been doing all her life," said Loukoumi president Nick Katsoris in a statement.
"She is a trailblazing performer, an inspiration to children to reach for the stars, and also to give back to others. Ms. Rivera's work with countless charities especially encouraging children to follow their dreams of performing make her the perfect recipient of this award. The children of the Loukoumi Foundation indeed have an exemplary role model in icon Chita Rivera!," said Katsoris.
Rivera will be honored December 1 in a ceremony held at New York City's Bond 45 Restaurant. Cocktail hour will begin at 6 PM. For tickets and more information, visit here.
