Chicago's Celebrated Mary-Arrchie Theatre Closes After 30 Years | Playbill

News Chicago's Celebrated Mary-Arrchie Theatre Closes After 30 Years Chicago's long-lived Mary-Arrchie Theatre Co. will close its doors following the conclusion of the 2015-16 season. Artistic director Richard Cotovsky told the Chicago Sun Times that the decision came as a result of losing their performance space of 26 years.

Cotovsky told the publication that the longtime space at Angel Island was set to be part of a large redevelopment project, so the 30th anniversary felt "like the right time to bid farewell."

"The loss of our building gave me the perfect opportunity to wrap things up on my own terms and just go away with a clean slate," he commented.

The final season will kick off with Peter Morris' Guardians, directed by Arianna Soloway. Performances will play Sept. 10-Oct. 18.

Founded by Cotovsky, the Mary-Arrchie Theatre Co. launched in 1986 with a production of Sam Shepard's 4-H Club and Cowboy Mouth, in which Cotovsky also starred. He has since performed and directed in several shows for the company, and in 2013 he was awarded the special Jeff Award for 40 years of involvement in non-equity theatre in Chicago. In addition to producing 30 seasons, the company has also continued to present its annual Abbie Fest, now in its 27th year, a festival of theatre, art, music and activism.
