The new opera Blue, by Tony Award winner Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home) and Tazewell Thompson, premiered at the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, New York, July 14.
The story follows a mother and father, a cop, after their son is killed. Tazewell, who writes the book and directs the piece, interviewed people in communities dealing with these issues to shape the characters.
Tesori premiered her first opera, A Blizzard On Marblehead Neck, at the Festival in 2011. The pair was approached by Glimmerglass Artistic and General Director Francesca Zambello to write the piece.
Blue continues at Glimmerglass through August 22 with a cast led by Kenneth Kellogg, Briana Hunter, Aaron Crouch, and Gordon Hawkins.
Subsequent productions are slated for various companies around the U.S., including Washington National Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago.
