Car-Related Incident Sidelines Actor from Athol Fugard Premiere Off-Broadway | Playbill

News Car-Related Incident Sidelines Actor from Athol Fugard Premiere Off-Broadway Signature Theatre has announced that due to a recent car-related incident and subsequent injury, Kevin Mambo will replace Sahr Ngaujah in the world premiere of The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek, written and directed by Athol Fugard ("Master Harold"...and the Boys, Blood Knot). Mambo was also co-lead with Ngaujah in Fela! on Broadway.

The news follows two recently announced extensions of the play. The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek will now play through June 14, following previews that began April 21.

The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek explores the history of apartheid and tells the story of aging farmer and artist Nukain, played by Leon Addison Brown (Cinemax's "The Knick," The Train Driver). Brown's character is inspired by the real life of South African artist Nukain Mabusa.

The cast also features Bianca Amato (Macbeth) and Caleb McLaughlin (The Lion King).

Fugard is the winner of the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Tony Award and previous Signature playwright-in-resident at the Off-Broadway theatre.

In The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek, aging farmer Nukain is approaching the end of a life-long project, that of painting the rocks at Revolver Creek and transforming the land into a colorful garden of painted flowers. According to press notes, "Now, the final unpainted rock, as well as his young companion Bokkie, has forced Nukain to confront his legacy as a painter, a person and a black man in 1980s South Africa. When the landowner’s wife arrives with demands about the painting, the profound rifts of a country hurtling toward the end of apartheid are laid bare." The design team includes Christopher H. Barreca (scenic design), Susan Hilferty (costume design), Stephen Strawbridge (lighting design), Stowe Nelson (sound design), Barbara Rubin (dialect coach). Linda Marvel is the production stage manager. Casting is by Telsey + Company, Karyn Casl, CSA.

Performances are at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center, located at 480 West 42nd St. To purchase tickets call (212) 244-7529 or visit signaturetheatre.org.
