News Bryan Cranston, Selena Gomez Part of James Franco’s John Steinbeck Film After starring in Of Mice and Men on Broadway, James Franco is taking on a directorial role with a screen adaptation of John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle.

James Franco, who starred as George in the 2014 Broadway revival of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, is directing and starring in a screen adaptation of the author’s 1936 novel In Dubious Battle.

Set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Franco leads an ensemble cast that also includes Sam Shepard, Bryan Cranston, Nat Wolff, Selena Gomez, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ed Harris, Josh Hutcherson, Ashley Greene, John Savage and Zach Braff.

The film has a screenplay by Matt Rager. The Depression-era drama centers on a group of workers who organize against unfair working conditions in California.
