Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera continued its victory lap last week, bringing in $1.8 million. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical has not seen box-office totals that high since December 2019, making last week its highest-grossing week since before the pandemic shutdown. The long-running musical has enjoyed renewed attendance since announcing its historic run will come to a close in February 2023 after 35 years on Broadway.
Cumulatively, Broadway grosses fell by almost $1.5 million, bringing in a total of $30.9 million with 82.65% of seats filled across all 34 currently running shows. Phantom of the Opera was the only production to play to standing room crowds with 101.36% of seats filled at the Majestic, with the most theatregoers seeing Disney's The Lion King—13,445 of them, in fact.
Otherwise, the top grossers of the week were the usual suspects, with The Music Man, Hamilton, and The Lion King taking the top three spots, followed by The Phantom of the Opera and MJ The Musical. Funny Girl, which has enjoyed a soaring box office since Glee star Lea Michele and Tovah Feldshuh joined the company in September, continued its success, bringing in $1.65 million.
