The L.A. Stage Alliance presents the annual awards, honoring professional theatre in the Los Angeles area. Neil Patrick Harris served as host of the 90-minute event at The Harriet & Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex, Cal State L.A.
Ovation Awards "celebrate the 168 theatre companies, 390 registered productions, and over 2,000 individual artists who participated in the Sept. 1, 2007 to Aug. 31, 2008, season." The awards recognize "large" theatres, "intimate" theatres and touring shows.
The Quality of Life — which also won in the category of Best Play Intimate Theatre, is currently playing an engagement at American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, with the cast that earlier premiered the play at the Geffen Playhouse. A commercial producer is attached for a wider future.
The winner in the category of Best Play Large Theatre was R. Buckminster Fuller: The History (and Mystery) of the Universe, presented by Rubicon Theatre Company.
The theatre earning the most Ovations was Cabrillo Music Theatre, with six. The production earning the most Ovations was Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities' Miss Saigon, with four. The nominees and recipients are below. Recipients are indicated in bold and with an asterisk. More than one recipient is possible in a category.
