In an in-depth interview with BuzzFeed News, Anthony Rapp, who created the role of Mark in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent, said that in 1986, when he was 14 years old, a 26-year-old Kevin Spacey made a sexual advance at the young actor.

Rapp said that he first met Tony and Oscar winner Spacey (then on Broadway in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night) at a theatre party in 1986 when he was starring in George Furth's Precious Sons on Broadway. At another post-show function, where Rapp was joined by a 17-year-old friend from his hometown of Joliet, Illinois, Spacey invited them both to join him at the Manhattan nightclub Limelight. It was at Limelight when Spacey invited the young actor to a party he was giving at his New York City apartment a few days later.

Rapp, who was the only non-adult at the party, said he became bored and wandered into the bedroom, where he sat on the edge of the bed and watched TV past midnight. At one point Rapp noticed that Spacey was standing in the doorway and realized that everyone else had left the party.

“My memory was that I thought, 'Oh, everybody's gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home,'” Rapp told BuzzFeed. “[Spacey] sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk.”

“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold," Rapp continued. "But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me.

“He was trying to seduce me,” Rapp said. “I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

Rapp said that Spacey was "pressing into me" and "tightening his arms," but Rapp was able to "squirm" out of the situation and headed to the bathroom, where he closed the door. Shortly after, he left.

Following the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Rapp felt compelled to tell his story. "Not to simply air a grievance," he explained, "but to try to shine another light on the decades of behavior that have been allowed to continue because many people, including myself, being silent. … I'm feeling really awake to the moment that we're living in, and I'm hopeful that this can make a difference."

He later tweeted that he tells his story now "standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out."

Rapp said that when he sees Spacey on screen now, “My stomach churns…I still to this day can't wrap my head around so many aspects of it. It's just deeply confusing to me.”

Spacey's representatives did not respond to BuzzFeed's calls, emails, and letter. Following the October 29 publication of the story, the actor posted a statement on Twitter alleging he does not recall the encounter, adding, "I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years" before definitively addressing long-standing rumors about his sexuality.
