Classic Stage Company's The Rediscovery
Readings series, featuring plays by female playwrights who shaped
American theatre, will kick off September 23 at 7 PM with Zona Gale's Pulitzer-winning Miss Lulu Bett.
Directed by Tony nominee Sheryl Kaller (Mothers and Sons), the cast will feature Tony nominee Steven Boyer (Kimberly Akimbo, Hand to God) as Dwight, Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky (Veep, Inventing Anna) as Lulu Bett, Manu Narayan (Company, Bombay Dreams) as Cornish, and Ella Stiller (Hubie Halloween) as Diana.
Miss Lulu Bett is set in 1920 and follows Lulu, an unmarried woman in her 30s, living with her sister Ina and her husband Deacon, who treat her like their servant. The arrival of Deacon's brother may change everything.
The new series will continue with an evening of short plays—including Trifles by Susan Glaspell—October 21 at 7 PM. Trifles, a mystery first performed in 1916, brings audiences behind the scenes of a murder investigation, when the women waiting in the kitchen may have a better view of the truth than the men in charge.
All readings will be held in CSC’s Lynn F. Angelson Theater on 13th Street. Two additional performances will be announced at a later date.
In
honor of its 2024-2025 season, CSC is shining a light on American women
who were writing the classics of the early 20th century but whose
legacies have been muted by time. The readings lead up to CSC's upcoming production of Alice Childress' Wine in the Wilderness.
