EGOT winner Andrew Lloyd Webber has been selected by King Charles III to write one of a dozen musical selections for his upcoming May 6 coronation, according to NPR.
Lloyd Webber's anthem, which is scored specifically for the organ and choir at Westminster Abbey, adapts the text of the biblical Psalm 98. In addition to Lloyd Webber, new compositions by Sarah Class, Nigel Hess, Paul Mealor, Tarik O'Regan, Roxanna Panufnik, Karl Jenkins, Shirley J. Thompson, Judith Weir, Roderick Williams, and Debbie Wiseman will be presented.
The service will also include traditional music from previous coronations, including work by composers William Byrd (1543–1623), George Frideric Handel (1685–1759), Edward Elgar (1857–1934), Henry Walford Davies (1869–1941), William Walton (1902–1983), Hubert Parry (1848–1918), and Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958).
Lloyd Webber is a favored composer for the English monarchy, previously collaborating with Lin-Manuel Miranda for the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee in 2022, and composing the official theme for her Diamond Jubilee with Gary Barlow in 2012. King Charles III's brother, Edward, previously worked for Lloyd Webber as a member of his company Really Useful Group in the 1980's.
Lloyd Webber's new musical, Bad Cinderella, is currently in previews at Broadway's Imperial Theatre.
