Big Fish, which ended its Broadway run Dec. 29, 2013, features music and lyrics by Grammy and Tony nominee Lippa with a book by Grammy and BAFTA Award nominee August. It opened Oct. 6 at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre, following previews that began Sept. 5.
The production featured musical direction by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, orchestrations by Larry Hochman and dance arrangements by Sam Davis. It was directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Susan Stroman.
Broadway Records recently released the cast recording of the world-premiere musical that starred two-time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz as story-spinner Edward Bloom.
"I fell in love with 'Big Fish' the moment I saw it on screen and knew it would make a sensational musical," Lippa said in a statement. "I got the opportunity to tell the story of this family and their triumphs and tears along with the fantastical stories Edward Bloom spins. The story was a perfect amalgam of sincerity and silly, human and hubris, truth and talltale. I love Edward Bloom because I am Edward Bloom. I tell stories and stretch the truth. Don't we all?"
TRW is currently readying materials for the production in anticipation of a fall availability for schools, community and professional theatres. Perusal scripts are currently available. TRW also licenses Lippa's Tony-nominated musical The Addams Family. "Being able to immediately offer our customers this brilliant show, direct from Broadway, is an opportunity for actors and audiences to foster a lifelong appreciation of the material and garner their own success story," said TRW president and CEO Steve Spiegel in a statement. "The big in Big Fish is the heart for it's an intimate family story about a father and his son. It will make you smile, bring a lump to your throat and a tear to your eye. With an inspiring love story and themes centered on tradition and learning how to fit into the world, professional and community theatres along with high schools will embrace the messages of the show. It will enjoy a wonderful life in TRW's growing catalog of Broadway shows for many years to come!"
Big Fish, according to press notes, "centers on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward's incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales. Big Fish is about dreaming, loving and living bigger."
