From Versailles to Vienna, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
Andrea Chénier opens at the Metropolitan Opera November 24. Tenor Piotr Beczala stars in the French Revolution-set opera as the titular poet Andrea Chénier, who manages to become an enemy of both the pre-revolution aristocracy and the post-revolution Reign of Terror. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva plays the noblewoman Maddalena di Coigny, with baritone Igor Golovatenko as the servant-turned revolutionary Carlo Gérard. Daniele Rustioni conducts Umberto Giordano's score, launching his three-year term as Principal Guest Conductor at the Met. This week at the Met performances will also continue of Bizet's Carmen and Richard Strauss' Arabella, both of which play their final fall performance November 29. Carmen will return in January with a new cast.
New York City Ballet's annual holiday production of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker returns to Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater November 28, where it will reside through January 4. The annual tradition features the company's entire roster of more than 150 dancers and musicians, as well as more than 120 children from the School of American Ballet.
Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the New York Philharmonic November 26-29 to perform Khachaturian's Piano Concerto. The program, conducted by Stéphane Denève, will also include Rautavaara's Cantus Arcticus, Respighi's Pines of Rome, and the New York premiere of Lera Auerbach's Icarus.
Musicians from the New York Philharmonic will present a NY Phil Ensembles concert at the Kaufman Music Center's Merkin Hall November 30. The all-French chamber concert will include works by Farrenc, Connesson, Milhaud, and Debussy.

The company will present three world premieres: Dwight Rhoden's Imagine Joy, set to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings; Houston Thomas' Young Lovers, featuring the music of Jeff Buckley, Tarika Blue, and MAW India; and I Got U by Complexions Co-Associate Artistic Director Joe González.
