Broadway's current revival of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People has recouped the costs of its run at the Circle in the Square Theatre. Running through June 23, the play is nominated for 5 Tony awards, including Best Revival of a Play and a performance nod for Jeremy Strong.
The revival, directed by Sam Gold from a newly adapted script by Amy Herzog, opened March 18—read the reviews here. Get your own copy of the An Enemy of the People opening night Playbill at The Playbill Store.
The company is led by Emmy Award winner Strong (Succession) as Doctor Thomas Stockmann, Emmy winner Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) as Peter Stockmann, and Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Hill House) as Petra Stockmann.
Set in a small Norwegian spa town, An Enemy of the People follows the principled Doctor Thomas Stockmann as he attempts to alert the public that the spa’s water is poisoned. The resulting backlash to his revelation, borne out of society's desperation for financial preservation, examines the morality of public outcry and the struggles shouldered by whistleblowers across time. This is the first production of the work to play Broadway since 2012, when Boyd Gaines led a revival.
