Manhattan Theatre Club's Broadway production of Amy Herzog's Mary Jane begins at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre April 2 ahead of an April 23 opening night. The limited run is scheduled to continue through June 2, with Anne Kauffman at the helm.
Rachel McAdams is making her Broadway debut in the title role, sharing the stage with Brenda Wehle as Ruthie and Tenkei, April Matthis as Sherry and Dr. Toros, Susan Pourfar as Brianne and Chaya, and Lily Santiago as Amelia and Kat. Katya Campbell, Susanna Guzmán, and Megumi Nakamura round out the company as understudies.
The play follows a single mother raising an ill child, and the female support system that surrounds her. The work premiered at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2017, coming to Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop later the same year. Both of those earlier runs were also directed by Kauffman, and Wehle and Pourfar are reprising her performance from the Off-Broadway bow as well.
Also back from the Off-Broadway production are scenic designer Laura Jellinek and sound designer Leah Gelpe, newly joined by costume designer Brenda Abbandandolo, lighting designer Ben Stanton, and hair, wig, and make-up designer J. Jared Janas. Narda E. Alcorn is production stage manager, and casting is by Caparelliotis Casting's Kelly Gillespie.
Manhattan Theatre Club is also currently presenting John Patrick Shanley's Brooklyn Laundry Off-Broadway at New York City Center with Cecily Strong and David Zayas leading the cast. Performances continue through April 14. Mary Jane is the company's final Broadway production for the season, with next season's offerings not yet announced.
