Matt Smith, who played Patrick Bateman in the London world premiere of the American Psycho musical, will play cult leader Charles Manson in the upcoming independent film Charlie Says.
Smith, who recently concluded a two-season stint as Prince Philip on Netflix's The Crown, is not the only artist attached with American Psycho roots. According to Variety, Mary Harron, who helmed the 2000 film adaptation, will direct the project, with Guinevere Turner (who co-wrote the movie with Harron) penning the screenplay.
Smith is also known for his performance as the Doctor on BBC’s Doctor Who. His additional stage credits include On the Shore of the Wide World, The History Boys, Swimming with Sharks, and That Face.
Charlie Says will focus on Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten , and Patricia Krenwinkel—the three women who were sentenced to death (and subsequently, life in prison) following the 1969 mass murder of Sharon Tate and four others.
Joining Smith in the cast are Hannah Murray, Odessa Young, Marianne Rendon, Suki Waterhouse, Carla Gugino, Kaylie Carter, and Merritt Wever.
