Actors' Equity Association, Broadway's 40,000-member union of actors and stage managers, presented its annual Rosetta LeNoire Award to Boston's Wheelock Family Theatre on April 7. The award was given in recognition of "outstanding contributions to increasing diversity in the American theatre."
The ceremony took place April 7 at Equity's New York offices.
Equity's Alan Eisenberg said that Wheelock "serves as a beacon to other theatres that diversity in casting neither subverts the artistic perspective of the play nor obstructs the audience's appreciation of the work."
Boston's Wheelock Family Theatre was established in 1981 and has made a policy of featuring "multicultural and intergenerational casts."
