On November 30, a listing on Playbill Jobs went viral on social media. It was an audition notice looking for actors for a zombie-themed musical. After several industry professionals expressed concern about the listing, we removed it from our website. Considering how much discussion that colorfully written post launched, we at Playbill felt it was important to offer an explanation on how this happened. We also want to inform you of the measures we are taking to improve our Playbill Jobs vetting processes in the future, so that any applicant can feel safe applying to jobs on our website.

The Playbill Jobs board is run by a dedicated team of three who vets the dozens of listings that we receive every day. For every listing that we receive, we confirm that the employer has provided a phone and email address (even if this information is not posted publicly). We require job posters to agree to our terms and conditions and work diligently to spot any violations. We do not accept listings from adult websites, listings that require actors to pay to participate, listings that don’t state their requirements upfront, and other stipulations that are detailed on our website. We also reserve the right to remove any published job listing at any time.

The Playbill Jobs team confirms every listing that comes to our website and have successfully flagged problematic postings in the past. But like any other human-driven process, mistakes do sometimes happen. When they do, we use those lessons to improve our vetting process for our jobs board. In this newest instance, we have added a stipulation in our terms and conditions saying that we can remove job listings if they contain “misleading or unauthorized content.” We are also operating with increased scrutiny in our vetting process.

In recent days, among The Producers jokes and investigative TikTok videos, there have also been questions around safety. We at Playbill are working hard to ensure that any job applicant can feel safe using our website. Playbill supports a healthy work environment free of discrimination and harassment. If you see any job listing that is inaccurate or is cause for alarm, please contact us so we can remove the posting from our website. Do not respond to any job listing containing situations that are mentally or physically harmful. Theatre should not come at the expense of your health and well-being.
