International News A New Production of Next to Normal Will Premiere in Taiwan

The new production of Tom Kitt's Tony Award-winning musical will feature direction by Carolyn Sun.

A new production of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal will premiere in Taiwan this summer, with performances beginning July 22 at the National Taichung Theater. The production, continuing through July 30, will feature a new creative team, with Carolyn Sun at the helm.

Taiwan native Ya Han Chang and Ellis Gage will star as Diana and Gabe, respectively. They will be joined by Taiwan radio & television personality Francis Chia as Doctor Madden and Doctor Fine, Chi as Natalie, ERay Chiang as Dan, and Sassoon Yang as Henry.

Debuting on Broadway in 2009 after an Off-Broadway run, Next to Normal centers on a suburban family dealing with various crisis as its matriarch struggles with worsening bipolar disorder. The work was the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner, and won three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Score and Orchestrations.

Sun's creative team features assistant direction and choreography by Hsing-Chun Hsu and Leo Chih-Hsiang Yen (who will also provide Mandarin subtitles), music direction by Yu-Mei Chang, scenic design by Hsuan-Hsun Cheng, costume design by Wen-Liang Chen, lighting design by I-Hua Kao, and sound design by Chien-Yang Tseng. Ching-Yu Hsieh will stage manage and ITing Lin will assistant stage manage. Next to Normal is presented in association with Activa Productions, Wuming Chen, and Hsiaoli Wu.
