This Christmas an all-star cast headed by Bill Pullman and Nathan Lane performs the 1947 Lux Radio version of It's a Wonderful Life -- or Merry Christmas, George Bailey, as it's known this time around -- on PBS.
The cast includes Bill Pullman as George Bailey, Nathan Lane as Clarence, Martin Landau as Mr. Potter and Penelope Ann Miller as Mary. Also in the cast are Sally Field, Hal Holbrook, Joe Mantegna, Bronson Pinchot and Christian Slater.
Jimmy Hawkins, who played Tommy in the now-classic 1946 film starring Jimmy Stewart and directed by Frank Capra, is the co-producer of this TV program, which features music by Dimitri Tiomkin.
This one-hour version of It's a Wonderful Life is based on the story originally written by Philip Van Doren -- which in turn was adapted for the '46 film by Capra, Jo Swerling (who co-wrote the book for Guys and Dolls) and Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett (the team who wrote the play The Diary of Anne Frank).
Merry Christmas, George Bailey airs in New York on WNET Channel 13 on Dec. 25 at 8 PM (be sure to check the TV listings for your particular city to see when it's being aired). --By Rebecca Paller
