Tony Awards 'A Culmination of an Amazing Year': Paul Tazewell on His Tony Win for Best Costume Design of a Musical

Tazewell also recently received an Oscar Award for his costume design for Wicked.

Just a few months after his Oscar win for his costume design in the first installment of the two-part Wicked movie musical (and becoming the first Black man to do so), Paul Tazewell has now taken home the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical for his work in Death Becomes Her.

"It is a culmination of an amazing year and I'm just so thrilled and blessed to have been offered these amazing design opportunities...for Death Becomes Her, when I was designing it, I wasn't designing it to receive the Tony, I was having a great time telling a story," said Tazewell in an exclusive interview with Playbill just moments after his big win. See the full interview in the video above. "Working with Christopher Gattelli and my other collaborators creates this world that can be magical...that would be reflective of the film, and also transcend that, as well. So, to now be acknowledged for the work is just very heartwarming and exciting," he said.

Death Becomes Her is running Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
