Watch Stripped-Down Onstage Performance of “Memory” | Playbill

News Watch Stripped-Down Onstage Performance of “Memory” Grizabella understudy Jessica Hendy covers the Cats classic onstage at the Neil Simon Theatre.

Jessica Hendy, who understudies glamour cat Grizabella in the Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, performs a stripped-down cover of “Memory” onstage at the Neil Simon Theatre, where the revival currently plays.

Hendy is accompanied by Jacob Yates on cello; the two are longtime friends, collaborators, and graduates from CCM (University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music). Hendy has also been seen in the original Broadway productions of Cats, Aida, and Amour. Yates is a musical director and cellist who has subbed for Wicked, Les Misérables, and Spring Awakening.

The video is filmed and edited by Tim Murray.

“We wanted to strip down ‘Memory’ to its bones,” said Hendy. “I was inspired one night leaving the theatre late and walking across the stage with only the ghost light lighting the way. I stopped mid stage, looked out into the vast darkness of the theatre, and thought what a magical thing it would be to sing with only just the ghost light. That never happens. I called Jacob, told him my idea, and we got to work right away."

Hendy is scheduled to play Grizabella all shows November 15-20. Tickets can be purchased at CatsTheMusical.com.
