This year’s four Initial Support recipients are Cardinal Stage (Bloomington, Indiana), Flint Repertory Theatre (Flint, Michigan), Local Theater Company (Boulder, Colorado), and The Wilbury Theatre Group (Providence, Rhode Island). The Second-Time Support grant recipients (awarded to theatre companies that have already received the grant in the last seven years) are Boise Contemporary Theater (Boise, Idaho), Boston Court (Boston, Massachusetts), Pasadena (Pasadena, California), New Jersey Repertory Company (Long Branch, New Jersey), North Carolina Stage Company (Asheville, North Carolina), Red Bull Theater (New York, New York), and Silk Road Rising (Chicago, Illinois).
According to the grant's guidelines, eligible theatres must have been in operation at least five, but not more than 15 years, have articulated a distinctive mission, cultivated an audience, and nurtured a community of artists in ways that strengthen the dynamism of American theatre.
“The American Theatre Wing is so proud to be supporting these ten exceptional theatre companies. They are creating outstanding theatrical work in diverse communities large and small all across the country. Through this work they continue the theatre’s long tradition of creating dialogue, provoking thought, educating, and bringing people together. We need this now more than ever before,” said Heather Hitchens, president of the American Theatre Wing.
The grants will be presented on November 12 at a private event. The application period for 2019 grants will open in the summer of next year.
