Amazon Prime Video will release its new film adaptation of William Shakespeare's King Lear, directed by Richard Eyre and co-produced with the BBC, September 28. The film is set in the fictional present and stars Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins as the infamous monarch; Emma Thompson, Emily Watson, and Florence Pugh play his daughters—Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia, respectively.

Rounding out the cast of King Lear are Jim Broadbent, who plays the Earl of Gloucester, Jim Carter as the Earl of Kent, Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Cornwall, John Macmillan as Edmund, Anthony Calf as the Duke of Albany, Simon Manyonda as the Duke of Burgundy, and Chukwudi Iwuji, recently seen on the Delacorte Theater stage as Othello, as the King of France.
As previously announced, King Lear will be seen on Broadway in 2019, directed by Sam Gold. Glenda Jackson, who won a Tony Award for her performance in Edward Albee's Three Tall Women, will reprise her work in the title role. Performances are set to begin February 28 at the Golden Theatre, prior to an opening night of April 4.
