Netflix is developing a hip-hop movie musical based on Romeo and Juliet, Variety reports. The project hails from rapper-director Solvan "Slick" Naim (the streaming service's upcoming It's Bruno), who will pen the script with Dave Broome.

Among the producers are Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere of Flavor Unit Entertainment, with Will Smith, James Lassiter, and Caleeb Pinkett serving as executive producers for Overbrook Entertainment.

The movie will set Shakespeare's tragedy in contemporary New York and follows a Brooklyn waitress and a musician from wealthy family.

The star-crossed romance serves as the inspiration for another New York–set musical: West Side Story, which is set to return to the big screen next year in a new adaptation from Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner.
