Eat And You Belong To Us, a new play by trans playwright MJ Kaufman, is presented May 5 at The LGBT Center in New York City. The work, which explores the transgender identity in current American culture, is presented as part of a new play reading program created by The Center and Broadway producer Tom Kirdahy.
The cast of Eat And You Belong To Us includes Arnie Burton, Cindy Cheung, David Greenspan, Miriam Hyman, Tom Phelan and Dale Soules. Natalie Rich provides stage directions.
Directed by Logan Reed, the reading takes place at 7:30 PM. There is a suggested $10 donation.
Here’s how it’s billed: “Grands is a trans grandparent. Jaime is their genderqueer grandchild. They are both obsessed with Joan of Arc. Grands wakes up from gender reassignment surgery speaking French and claiming they survived a fire. The same day, Jaime, who has been pretending to be Joan of Arc for weeks, goes missing. Eat And You Belong To Us traverses contemporary queer landscapes and medieval France chronicling one family's questions about gender and nation.”
Kaufman is a member of the Public Theater’s Emerging Writer’s Group whose Sagittarius Ponderosa will premiere Off-Broadway this fall at the National Asian American Theater Company.
Kirdahy is the Tony-nominated producer of Broadway’s forthcoming musical Anastasia, as well as The Visit, Mothers and Sons, It’s Only a Play, After Midnight and the revivals of Master Class and Ragtime.
