Broadway News Mary Beth Peil Sets Departure From Broadway’s Anastasia The Tony Award nominee originated the role of the Dowager Empress in the Ahrens and Flaherty musical based on the 1997 animated film.

Tony Award nominee Mary Beth Peil, who originated the role of the Dowager Empress in the Broadway stage adaptation of Anastasia, will play her final performance in the production September 23.

Peil’s replacement has yet to be announced.

Peil has been with the production since its spring 2016 world premiere at Hartford Stage.

The Broadway veteran is known for her roles in The King and I opposite Yul Brynner, as well as Nine, The Visit, and the popular TV series Dawson’s Creek.

Anastasia stars Christy Altomare as Anya, Zach Adkins as Dmitry, Vicki Lewis as Countess Lily, John Bolton as Vlad, and Max von Essen as Gleb.
