As first confirmed by Playbill, the London staging of the Henry Krieger-Tom Eyen musical Dreamgirls will arrive on Broadway next season.
Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, a recent casting notice states that Broadway rehearsals will begin in early 2018, with a production schedule to be announced.
No word yet on whether Glee star Amber Riley will repeat her Olivier-winning performance as Effie White on Broadway.
This new production of Dreamgirls incorporates material from the 2006 film version (namely the song “Listen”). London critics praised the revival that opened December 14, 2016, at the Savoy Theatre. Read reviews here. The show extended its booking through October 21.
This new production features the work of Tony Award-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes, as well as set designer Tim Hatley, lighting designer Hugh Vanstone, and sound designer Richard Brooker. Hair design is by Josh Marquette.
Dreamgirls features music by Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Tom Eyen. The late Michael Bennett directed and choreographed the original Broadway production; Bennett won a Tony Award for the show's choreography.
A cast album will be released May 12.
