Lincoln Center Theater has unveiled its upcoming season, which will include a Broadway debut for Adam Guettel and Tina Landau's 1996 musical Floyd Collins. The musical will begin performances at the Vivian Beaumont March 27, 2025, with opening night set for April 21.
Landau will direct the new staging, as she did the musical's 1996 Off-Broadway debut at Playwrights Horizons.
Based on a true story, Floyd Collins is the story of a cave explorer who discovers a cave he thinks could be the next goldmine tourist attraction, only to become trapped inside on his way out. Above ground, the scene becomes one of the country's first-ever media circuses.
The cancellation of a planned 2022 Off-Broadway revival of the work indicates that the upcoming Broadway production will likely feature revisions. Out of the Box Theatrics explained the cancellation of its staging, sharing that Landau and Guettel were in the process of revising the show and did not wish for it to be produced in New York City at that time.
Floyd Collins joins the previously announced McNEAL in LCT's Broadway season. The latter will be the company's fall Broadway offering, with performances beginning September 5 ahead of a September 30 opening night in the Beaumont. Robert Downey Jr. is set to star.
Also at the Beaumont will be a one-night-only reunion concert of LCT's 2008 revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, taking the stage December 9. Kelli O’Hara, Paulo Szot, Matthew Morrison, Danny Burstein, Loretta Ables Sayre, Sean Cullen, Victor Hawks, Li Jun Li, Skip Sudduth, Noah Weisberg, and more from the revival's original cast will be on hand to reprise their performances, with more to be announced. The evening will serve as a benefit for the company, with proceeds supporting productions and education programs.
Off-Broadway, the company is bringing Katori Hall's The Blood Quilt to the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, with performances beginning October 30 ahead of a November 21 opening night. Lileana Blain-Cruz will direct the work, about four estranged sisters who reunite to create a family quilt in honor of their recently deceased mother. LCT's staging follows a world premiere at Washington, D.C.'s Arena Stage in 2015.
In 2025, LCT will present a new revival of Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts Off-Broadway at the Newhouse, with performances beginning February 13, 2025. Opening night will be March 10. Mark O'Rowe has penned a new adaptation of the play, which will be directed by Jack O'Brien.
The LCT season also includes the previously announced LCT3 world premiere of Phillip Howze's Six Characters in the Claire Tow Theater, directed by Dustin Wills. Performances begin July 13 ahead of a July 29 opening night.
