The Sondheim on Sondheim cast with the Boston Pops Michael Blanchard

When Sondheim on Sondheim played the Boston Pops last month, audience members may have noticed that the songs sounded a little different than usual.

Compliments of Sondheim on Sondheim creator James Lapine and orchestrator Michael Starobin, the two-night engagement featured a completely re-orchestrated score. The revue, which bowed on Broadway in 2010, is a retrospective of the life’s work of eight-time Tony winner Stephen Sondheim through Sondheim’s own words on film, plus live performances and music. Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart worked with Lapine and Starobin to create the lush new sound, which also played Tanglewood July 8.

Directed by Sarna Lapine, whose revival of Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sunday in the Park With George reopened Broadway’s Hudson Theatre, the show featured Tony winner Ruthie Ann Miles (The King & I), Tony winner Gabriel Ebert (Matilda The Musical), Tony nominee Carmen Cusack (Bright Star), Tony nominee Phillip Boykin (Porgy and Bess), and more.

A benefit performance of Sondheim on Sondheim will play the Hollywood Bowl July 23. Read about that star-studded production here.
