Manhattan Theatre Club will present the world premiere of Donja R. Love’s Sugar in Our Wounds as part of its 2017–2018 season. The production, directed by Saheem Ali, will begin May 22, 2018, at New York City Center — Stage II. Opening night is set for June 5.

The play is part of Love’s exploration of queer relationships during pivotal moments in Black history. The story follows a young slave named James during the Civil War, who forms an unexpected bond and romance with a mysterious stranger.

Love’s latest work is a 2017 finalist at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference. His additional plays include Fireflies and In the Middle (both part of The Love* Plays, alongside Sugar in Our Wounds) and Soft; Or the Dead N---- Poem.

Ali’s recent directorial credits include the Publc Theater Mobile Unit’s presentation of Twelfth Night, Nollywood Dreams at Cherry Lane Theater, and Dot at Detroit Public Theater.

Casting and a creative team will be announced at a later date.
