Cynthia Erivo Lands Role in Steve McQueen Film

Cynthia Erivo, who won a Tony Award for her critically acclaimed performance as Celie in the John Doyle-directed Broadway revival of The Color Purple, will join fellow Tony winner Viola Davis in the new feature film Widows, according to Variety.

Directed by Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), the New Regency film will feature a script by Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn and McQueen.

The heist thriller, according to the industry website, “follows four armed robbers who are killed in a failed heist attempt, leaving their widows to finish the job.” No timeline has been announced for the film.

Erivo is currently making her Broadway debut in The Color Purple, after appearing in the London production of the musical. She was previously seen on screen in PBS' Mr. Selfridge.

Davis won her Tony Awards for her performances in August Wilson's King Hedley II and Fences.
