Bette Midler and Sharon Stone will co-star in a new film version of Charles Busch’s Tony-nominated play The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, according to Deadline. Midler, who recently wrapped up her Tony-winning turn as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, will play Marjorie Taub, the role originated by Linda Lavin in the 2000 Broadway staging; Stone will play her childhood friend Lee, the role played by Michele Lee.
In Busch’s comedy, a visit from an old friend helps rouse Marjorie, the wife of allergist Ira Taub, from a deep personal crisis. The play debuted on Broadway in the fall of 2000 following a successful Off-Broadway run from Manhattan Theatre Club. Artistic director Lynne Meadow directed.
Deadline reports that producer and director Andy Fickman (Kevin Can Wait, Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical, and Parental Guidance with Midler) will direct, with Tony-winning producer Daryl Roth (who produced The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife on Broadway) also attached to the project.
A production schedule or release date have not yet been announced.
