Created in 1992 by Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell as a fund raising event for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the inaugural Broadway Bares featured seven dancers stripping on a bar and raised about $8,000. Twenty-plus years later, the event is a completely choreographed extravaganza of modern burlesque. On June 23, Broadway Bares 23: United Strips of America hit an all-time record high (for the fourth year in a row!) adding $1,430,241 to BC/EFA’s coffers. The evening featured special appearances by 2013 Tony Award winners Judith Light, Billy Porter, Alan Cumming and musical performers The Skivvies. Read the Playbill story.

During BroadwayCon 2016, Lena Hall, Jenn Colella, Alysha Umphress, and Stark Sands took the stage for a round of karaoke. There was, however, a bit of a twist. The artists weren’t allowed to choose songs, that decision was left up to the BroadwayCon attendees! The fans voted for a raucous AC/DC classic, a tear-jerker made popular in Dawson’s Creek, an inspirational Queen tune direct from the heart of the late great Freddie Mercury, and a Broadway fave that Lena Hall now gets to sing “for real” when she takes on the title role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

In this look back at the inaugural BroadwayCon, Playbill’s former Editor in Chief Blake Ross hosted a panel with Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of Hamilton. Here, the cast members look back upon how it was that they came to be a part of the groundbreaking show.

More than 15,000 fans will be able to attend this year’s BrodwayCon at the Jacob K. Javits Center. Scheduled appearances by Lena Hall, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Javier Muñoz, Jeremy Jordan, Kelli O’Hara, Cynthia Nixon, Christopher Jackson and many, many more will bring theatre fans from across the world to NYC for the second annual installment of the event.

First Lady Michelle Obama was joined by cast members from Wicked, The Color Purple, Waitress and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical for Broadway Shines a Light on Girls’ Global Education. Held at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on September 19, the event featured performances from the Broadway shows as Obama, Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, host Stephen Colbert and young women from across the globe, who put the spotlight on Let Girls Learn, an initiative designed to create access to education for girls. In conjunction with this year’s United Nations General Assembly, the presentation allowed The First Lady to reach out directly to the spouses of other world leaders in the attendance.

Student performers at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, NE, took a stand against hate and violence in a musical performance of the Stephen Schwartz song “In the Beginning/”Spark of Creation” from Children of Eden.

Lorna Luft’s mother Judy Garland is arguably the most beloved icon of the gay community. Here, Luft talks about her mother’s influence on her own vision of humanity, visiting the Stonewall Inn for the first time and the shared message of every Gay Pride parade across the globe. She plays Feinstein’s/54 Below June 22, 24 and 25 to usher in Pride weekend.

Connecticut Public Television’s new series The Kate is recorded before a live audience at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. In this peek at the series, Gasteyer performs “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. Full Episodes of The Kate will be released online each Saturday from March 19 to April 23 and presented on public television stations nationally. Visit thekate.tv.

In preparation for Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick’s Broadway opening of Disaster!, Rudetsky took to the main stage at BroadwayCon to gab with—and share “HIGH-larious” stories about—cast members Faith Prince, Kerry Butler, Kevin Chamberlin, Max Crumm and Rachel York. Wait—Faith Prince was ACTUALLY CAST as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors but had to back out?!

As an impromptu grand finale to BroadwayCon's Waitress panel, Sara Bareilles took to the piano to perform "She Used to Be Mine." The heartbreaking but hopeful tune is featured in the show as well as on her fifth album "Songs From Waitress."

Sara Bareilles (music and lyrics), Diane Paulus (director) and Jessie Nelson (book) took the stage at BroadwayCon to chat with Playbill's Blake Ross about the gestation of the screen-to-stage adaptation of the new musical. Bareilles capped off the event with a surprise performance.

Lisa Kron, Judy Kuhn, Michael Cerveris and Emily Skeggs took the stage at BroadwayCon to talk about the challenges of working on a musical adapted from a memoir in the form of a graphic novel.

BroadwayCon hosted a panel of Fiddler on the Roof cast members featuring Adam Kantor, Jessica Hecht, Michael C. Bernardi, Jeffrey Schecter, Alexandra Silber and Samantha Massell. Here, they discuss how their own Jewish heritages informed — or were informed by — performing in the classic musical.

Sarah Jane, Julie, Logan, Len, Nick and the rest of the gang are working hard at Playbill's booth in BroadwayCon's marketplace. Tee shirts, pajamas, classic opening night Playbills, key chains and all kinds of Broadway-themed souvenirs are for sale. There is a also a fun photo booth and a demo of the new Playbill app for mobile devices!

Cast members Anthony Rapp, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Rodney Hicks, Aiko Nakasone, Fredi Walker-Browne, and Jesse L. Martin (via FaceTime!) were joined by choreographer Marlies Yearby, casting agent Bernie Telsey, New York Theatre Workshop's James C. Nicola and Jonathan Larson's sister Julie Larson McCollum to talk about the historic production.

B.B. King Blues Club & Grill will host Inspirational Voices, a one-night-only concert featuring Renée Elise Goldsberry, Adam Pascal, Telly Leung, Joshua Henry, Eden Espinosa, Marcus Paul James, Jarrod Spector and Michael McElroy & The Broadway Inspirational Voices. Here, McElroy, Goldsberry, Leung and James rehearse a jazzy rendition of the Oklahoma! favorite "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'."

Wicked's latest installment in their "Out Of Oz" series features Aaron Tveit in studio performing a stripped-down version of "Popular." He is accompanied by Ben Cohn (who also did the arrangement) on piano and Ric Molina on guitar.

The first annual BroadwayCon wrapped up on Jan. 24 with cheers and tears. The historic weekend brought theatre fans from across the country to NYC's Hilton Midtown to celebrate their love of theatre amongst their favorite stars. Keep your eyes peeled this week for a ton of BroadwayCon videos!

Two intrepid Broadway fans detailed their snowy journey to NYC's Hilton Midtown in the knee-deep snow. A puny little storm like this (27 inches of snow, that's nothing!) wasn't getting in the way of their day at BroadwayCon.

Fun Home star Emily Skeggs sat down over a quick (but protein-rich!) breakfast to share her enthusiasm for taking the stage at BroadwayCon to talk about the Tony-winning show.

BroadwayCon Jukebox is live band karaoke where the audience gets to vote which song their favorite stars will sing by using the BroadwayCon mobile app. Here, Lena Hall, Alysha Umphress, Stark Sands and Jenn Colella sing tunes by AC/DC, Queen and more!

Playbill.com's Michael Gioia hosted a panel featuring Spring Awakening cast and creatives at BroadwayCon. Here, Andy Mientus, Katie Boeck and Alex Boniello gave their thoughts on what they learned and how the've grown since being part of a cast that includes Deaf, hard of hearing and differently-abled actors.

Mia is a super-fan attending BroadwayCon. She wears her love of the stage on her sleeve — literally! Check out her cool tattoos representing some of her all time faves, including Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Little Shop of Horrors and The Book of Mormon.

Lin-Manuel Miranda (with Phillipa Soo handling beatbox duties) broke down the excitement of BroadwayCon with an impromptu rap during the day's Hamilton panel. Check out the rap and some cool shots of the day's events including panels, fan meet ups and musical performances.

Meet some of the hardcore theatre fans who are out in force at New York City's Hilton Midtown to take in the sites and sounds of BroadwayCon.

BroadwayCon officially began the festivities with a rousing number that got right to the point — the inaugural convention is THE place for theatre fans to be. Special guests Tommy Tune, Ben Vereen, Lena Hall, Stark Sands, Ann Harada, Patrick Page and more made the opening that much more special.

Tony and Grammy Award winner Jennifer Holliday performed at a special benefit edition of Broadway Names with Julie James Live on Jan. 18, 2016 at 42West in Manhattan. The lineup for the event also included Tony Award winners Michael Cerveris and Laura Benanti, and The Color Purple's Rema Webb. Holliday sang eight songs, including the Dreamgirls classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."

Noises Off star Rob McClure gave Playbill and exclusive sneak peek at some BroadwayCon performance numbers. The event runs Jan. 21-23 at New York City's Hilton Midtown and features some of Broadway's biggest stars.

Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison will join First Lady Michelle Obama in hosting "Broadway at the White House," a Thanksgiving TV special on the TLC network. The show honors some of the nation's top performing arts students and will feature performances from Finding Neverland, Fun Home, An American in Paris, On Your Feet!, School of Rock – The Musical and Something Rotten!.

On Aug. 16, Amazing Grace presented an open-captioned performance of the show. Cast members of the Broadway-bound Deaf West Theatre production of Spring Awakening — many of whom are deaf or hard of hearing — were in attendance. Unbeknownst to them, the Amazing Grace performers had secretly been rehearsing the titular hymn in American Sign Language. During the show's finale, both casts were in tears! Open captioning was provided by the TDF Accessibility Program.

One of midtown New York City's favorite green spaces was packed with theatre fans for the final week of the popular summer series Broadway in Bryant Park, sponsored by 106.7 Lite FM. Spring Awakening cast members Katie Boeck and Sandra Mae Frank took the stage to perform "Mama Who Bore Me." The Broadway-bound production (previews begin Sept. 8) features deaf, hearing and hard of hearing actors and incorporates American Sign Language into the performance.

The King and I stars Jose Llana and Ruthie Ann Miles took the stage in one of NYC's most-loved green spaces for the final performance of the 2015 series of Broadway in Bryant Park, sponsored by 106.7 Lite FM. Cast members from the upcoming productions of Daddy Long Legs, Dames at Sea and Once Upon a Mattress previewed theirs shows as well. See a sneak peek of Spring Awakening.

Broadway Sings for Pride celebrated its 5th anniversary with a few special treats. Here, Frenchie Davis and a multitude of Rent cast members from productions that spanned the globe performed the moving "Seasons of Love." See Davis bring down the house when she sings from The Wiz.

On June 22, Broadway Sings for Pride celebrated its 5th year with a host of Broadway performers singing pop and show tunes. In this reel of highlights, they run through songs by Madonna, Elton John, Eminem and Rihanna and from shows including Funny Girl and Songs for a New World. See Frenchie Davis bring down the house when she sings from The Wiz.

"American Idol" and Rent star Frenchie Davis performed before a capacity crowd at Broadway Sings for Pride on June 22. Her take on "Home" from The Wiz brought the house down.
