BREAKDOWN

THE STORYTELLER OF EAST LA


SYNOPSIS: A story of three generations of Chicana women in East Los Angeles, coping with the family’s matriarch’s descent into dementia and the diseases in their lives, as they reconcile their dark pasts and glimpse with hope into an uncertain future.


SEEKING:

MERCY - (Female. Mexican-American. 80s) The Mother / She is in the late stages of dementia and needs 24-hour care. She lives in two worlds: The Present and The In Between.

SERAFINA - (Female. Mexican) Timeless / Mercy's Guardian Angel / She has been watching over Mercedes her whole life. She is always by Mercy's side but only Mercy can see her.

GRACE - (Female. Chicana. 40-50) The Daughter / She is in charge of her mother's well-being and is stressed out about it. She is well-spoken and stylish.

MARY - (Female. Chicana. 40-50) The Other Daughter / She doesn't come around often and doesn't help with the mother's care. She's an Eastside hoochie.

LULU - (Female. Chicana. 20-25) The Granddaughter / A writer. She is Grace's daughter and worried about her mother's stress. She tries her best to keep the peace. She has a special bond with Mercy and grew up listening to her stories.

JOSEFA - (Female. Mexican. 40-50) The Caregiver / She is Mercy's main caregiver who takes care of her most personal needs.

VANESSA SOTO - (Female. Latine. 40-50) Mercy's social worker. She means well, but she's stressed and wound tight.
