Breakdown

THE 39 STEPS

NOTE: “The 39 Steps” is a comedic adaptation of the old Alfred Hitchcock movie of the same title. It is a fast-paced and action-packed romp whose main performance requirements are sharp comedic timing and physical stamina. All roles are open to any race or ethnicity.

SEEKING:

Richard Hannay – 40s, Male presenting. Any race or ethnicity. 1930s leading man type. Suave, dashing, and debonaire. Intelligent and resourceful. A touch full of himself. Maybe more than a touch. Upper-class British accent and is an adept physical comic.

Annabella/Pamela/Margaret – 30s-40s. Female presenting. Any race or ethnicity. The primary role is the classic 1930s British ingenue, but doubles as a German spy and a Scottish farmer. Able to perform all of the applicable accents. Is an adept physical comic and creates all three very different characters.

Clown #1 & Clown #2 – 30s-50s. Any gender, race, or ethnicity. The two clowns portray over 150 roles over the course of the play and are essentially EVERYONE that the two leads are not. They must be physically agile and have a great deal of stamina, in addition to having a slew of accents (especially European) and voices at their disposal. Exemplary comedic timing is essential! Able to lift certain set pieces and move adroitly throughout the stage and between roles.
