DESCRIPTION

General: The Acting Company (TAC) seeks a touring Technical Director (TD) for their 2026 NYC School Tour. The 2026 NYC School Tour is a 75-minute, 6-actor production of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, in a modern verse translation by Lisa Peterson.


For three weeks in April and May, tour will travel to NYC schools (Monday through Friday), load in, perform, and load out. This is a local commitment - there are no overnight conditions: the full team will travel to the school each morning, and return home after the work day. The physical production (set, costumes, props, etc) will travel in a rented van, driven by the team. Following these three weeks, there will be one week of public performances at The Sheen Center for Thought and Culture (18 Bleecker Street).


This is a great opportunity for a theatre technician who has knowledge about multiple departments, with more concentrated knowledge in scenic/props, and has an eagerness to pitch in wherever needed.


Company Information: The Acting Company (www.theactingcompany.org) is a fifty-year-old theatre company dedicated to developing artists and audiences through touring productions of classic texts.


Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to discussions during pre-production process, in terms of scale and achievability, as well as tourability/durability of fabricated items

  • Collaborate with Associate Producer to create packing plan for travel vehicle (van)

  • Serve as primary driver of the van, from parked location to school and back

  • Oversee and participate in load-in at school, including scenic and props, and assisting with wardrobe and sound as needed

  • Run a minimal performance track (such as turning overhead lights on or off)

  • Oversee and participate in load-out and van packing

  • Communicate regularly with The Acting Company management team about progress of tour, challenges, etc


Schedule:

  • Currently in pre-production, meetings TBD

  • Rehearsals April 7 through April 26 (minimal commitment during this time)

  • School Tour Performances April 27 through May 15

    • Monday through Friday

  • General Schedule for each school performance:
    • Load in (~2 hours)

    • Performance & Talkback (~90 minutes)

    • Load Out (~30 minutes)

  • Residency at Sheen Center May 19 through May 24

    • During these Sheen Center performances, the TD will likely serve as the Lighting Board programmer and operator


Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience

  • Experience working around children

  • Experience working in schools

  • Experience with stage weaponry

  • Union production experience

  • Valid US driver’s license, comfortable driving van in NYC

  • Local to the NYC area (housing not provided)

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, push/pull 100 lbs, stand for extended periods of time (3+ hours), navigate multiple levels of stairs

  • Some knowledge of light board operation


Salary:

  • This position will be paid $1,000/week during performances (April 27 through May 24), up to 40 hours/week

  • Any pre-performance needs/time will be paid at a rate of $27/hour
