Diamond Head Theatre — “The Broadway of the Pacific” — is seeking a Technical Director, primarily responsible for supervision and construction of production scenic designs for Diamond Head Theatre. The Technical Director is a full-time exempt position responsible for the operations of the DHT Scene Shop, both as a building center and a design workshop. They ensure safe working practices, provide production management, and facilitate repair and maintenance of the theatre resources and equipment. Key to this is a strong work ethic centered on excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships and communications with all artistic parties (designers, actors, etc.), as well as administrative staff, board members, and volunteers.
The DHT mainstage season features the mounting of 6 productions and other special events and the scenic elements required for those events annually.
What You’ll Do...
Supervise operations of the scene shop which includes, but is not limited to:
Construction:
• Generate working construction drawings/models for the building of sets with knowledge of Vectorworks software, or another relevant method;
• Supervises and safely builds each mainstage production set per the specifications of the Scenic Designer;
• Stays abreast of new technology and software relative to scenic design and construction.
• Completes construction of all scenic design elements within the designated time period as determined by the overall production schedule.
Purchasing / Budget:
• Determines the necessary technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies;
• Purchases, leases and/or borrows equipment as needed.
Equipment / Inventory maintenance:
• Maintains current knowledge of all scene shop equipment and supervises training on all equipment.
Supervision and training:
• Manages back-of-house staff, and along with the Production Coordinator, helps recruit, manage and retain back-of-house volunteers;
• Enforces safe work habits in all workplaces;
• Develops, implements and monitors policies to ensure a safe work environment in the scene shop, back stage and stage areas.

The ideal candidate will have:
• A minimum of 5 years of carpentry or related experience;
• Ability and knowledge (including familiarity with ADA and OSHA compliance) to handle multiple, simultaneous tasks in a timely manner;
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
• Heavy-lifting abilities; the ability to lift 50 pounds regularly;
• Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time;
• Competent, working knowledge of theatrical equipment, design tools and software;
• Ability to work collaboratively with other team members;
• Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends; a flexible schedule is a requirement and patience and a good-natured attitude;
• Commitment to an inclusive, accessible, and equitable workplace environment; sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and backgrounds of artisans, staff and volunteers.
• Experience in welding (MIG) a plus; and
• Previous experience in a live theatre or performing arts environment is desirable.
