Job purpose

The Supervising Stagehand plans all work and directs/plans the work of others in the Backstage department. Responsible for staffing and performance decisions within the Backstage department. Controls the budget for the Backstage department. Prepares and/or develops plans for projects involving the Denver Center Theatre Company (DCTC) and Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) productions.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for the oversight of the installation and strike of technical effects for DCTC and TYA productions.
  • Oversight of budgets relating to Backstage Operations.
  • Schedule Stagehands to all calls including rehearsals, performances and work calls.
  • With the Sound Supervisor, develop work and show calls for sound team.
  • Schedule Stagehands for Denver Center Events as required.
  • Track hours and prepare payrolls for all Stagehands.
  • Attend to show related touch up, maintenance and repairs.
  • Purchase all materials necessary for Backstage Operations.
  • With the Technical Director, schedule the load-in and strike of all technical elements from the theatres.
  • With the Technical Director, plan the methods and schedules for rigging and special effects, including fog and pyrotechnic effects.
  • Management of backstage inventory, to include DCTC soft goods, pyrotechnic effects, tools, safety equipment, rigging, and related equipment.
  • Attend meetings, technical rehearsals, and previews as necessary.
  • Facilitate filling in for Stagehands assigned to performance duties in the event of absence or missed call. Coverage for assignments may come from this position as necessary.
  • Ensure DCTC compliance with IATSE CBA.
  • Ensure safe practices and actively promote a culture of safety.
  • Employee will be required to attend safety training as necessary.
  • Oversee and track rigging inspection for all Bonfils theatres.
  • Provide labor estimates and manage staffing for non-DCTC events in the theatres.
  • Exercises great latitude for independent judgment and decision making. Makes all day-to-day decisions for the Backstage department and for the Center as it relates to this area.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated continued experience as Stagehand Supervisor in similar scope.
  • Thorough knowledge of theatrical stagecraft and technology, including rigging skills, theatre counter-weight systems, and theatrical lighting.
  • Knowledge of pyrotechnic elements, use and control including the ability to design and implement pyrotechnic displays before a proximate audience as per NFPA 1126.
  • Previous Fall protection, First Aid, CPR, and AED training preferred.
  • OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • ETCP or PLASA rigging and lighting certification preferred.
  • Should be familiar with all tools utilized in the construction and rigging of theatrical scenery (both wood and metal working), Forklifts, and fall protection equipment.

Supervisor responsibilities

Leads all full time seasonal direct reports and casual labor as needed. Assigns and schedules work, provides training, evaluates skills, interviews, and requests necessary labor from Local 7.

Working conditions

Work is primarily in the theatres. Schedule must be flexible to include weekends, evenings, and long hours during technical rehearsals

Physical requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May be required to wear a respirator.

$88,933.00 Annually

$88,933.00 – $88,933.00 per year
