Theatre 4the People is seeking self tape submissions for our 2026 production of Courting Mayhem by Sidney Rushing directed by Cooper Howell.
Contract: The Producers plan on applying for an AEA Showcase
$600 Stipend
Synopsis:
An enduring friendship of two middle class families goes wrong when their sons compete against each other for one coveted basketball position to the golden doors of the NBA. A tense 48 hour cycle of the Kingwood Classic will leave lives in mayhem or magnificence.
SEEKING
TRINA HOLLINGSWORTH
Black Female, 30s
Character Description:
Mother to Andre. Wife to Jonathan James. Best sister girlfriend to Cam Rutherford. A descendant of slaves but now a survivor, 30's. An alluring woman with everything meticulously in place. Second Runner up in beauty contests and life. But now she wants first place in life by all means. She will take bullets and spears to her body to make sure Andre gets his first place in life…despite the counterfeit coaches, despite the unequal playing field and despite James’ foolishness.

CAMILLE “CAM” RUTHERFORD

Character Description:
Mother to Jules. Wife to Benny. And best sister girlfriend to Trina. A descendant of slaves now a thriver, 30's, a magnetic force of nature pressed in purpose, principle and professionalism with a ferocious edge that she hides beneath a joviality veneer. She's been first place in life but can't see that. Feels she's running in fifty directions as a mother and wife. With all that running, she still feels she’s running in place. Fighting ferociously to give her son "THE BEST" place in life withing the NBA despite him being perceived second to Andre’s basketball super star greatness.
BENNY RUTHERFORD

Character Description:
Father to Jules. Husband to Cam. Decades long friends to the Hollingsworth family. African American, 30’s, an endangered species - earthy former green beret of integrity, discipline, and values. Could have been a Temptation Singer. Life is built on fairness, sports, paranoia, discipline and the TV show, Cheaters. He wants to keep everything in a straight line for what they have strategically planned for Jule’s coronation into the NBA with no mess. Do not move this man’s cheese.
JONATHAN JAMES HOLLINGSWORTH II
Black Male 30s
Character Description:
Father to Andre. Participatory husband to Trina. Decades friends to the Hollingsworth family – after all, their sons grew up together. African American, 30's, playful, a hard on sport-acholic, former semi-kinda-professional basketball player. James wants to break out of the middle-class prison strait jacket that suffocates him. As he fights for his son to keep the basketball family legacy alive despite the crooked unfairness of this one moment in time basketball game - to do what he couldn't accomplish as a basketball player.
ANDRE CHAMONIQUE HOLLINGSWORTH
Black Male, 17
Character Description:
Son to Trina and Jonathan James. Blood knot friends 4 life to Jules. African American, 17, Energized Teenager ready for the NBA, sex and the buffet of life. An incredible gifted player. Eccentric. Humorous. Pushes the envelope. Spoiled. He’s the answer. Old boy is fighting tough for the NBA dream he has been groomed since birth by his parents.
JULES CLEMONTE RUTHERFORD

Character Description:
Son to Cam and Benny. Blood knot Friends 4 life to Andre. African American, 17, Calm, Even Tempered Teen, Perfect Poster Boy Model Student. A Dedicated son to his parents Benny and Cam he will do anything to please them by getting into the NBA at all costs but he also wants to do whatever he can to help out is lifelong friend Andre

Character Description:
Basketball college recruiter for Jules and Andre. And a frustrated counselor to their helicopter parents. African - American, 50's, Deep-Fried Old-School Southerner. He's got a bull shit detector in his ass and a heart of love as huge as the Grand Canyon for his players. Not politically correct and he could not give a flying fuck. He's the King of the Thing. This is his last "great" team pick before retirement and he’s gotta get it steam clean perfect. No missteps. Go big or go home.
