This spring, the Showpeople Songwriting Showdown returns for its third season! We are seeking songwriters to join us for an online, reality tv-style competition gameshow based on musical theater songwriting!

In five rounds held over the course of two months, paired up teams of composers and lyricists will write original songs to fulfill randomly assigned prompts. Each team will receive a coaching session with our contestant advisor before submitting their song to our panel of judges (which includes a new guest judge every week!). During our episode tapings, teams will present their songs to the judges over Zoom. Judges will provide immediate feedback and score each song. These scores will determine each round’s winners and eliminated team(s).

During the first two rounds, teams will produce their own demos (which need not be professional quality). Teams who move on to the final three rounds of the competition will receive demos of their songs produced by Showpeople and recorded by professional vocalists. With contestants’ consent, Showpeople will release songs from SSS Season 03 on streaming platforms, crediting each team member for their contributions to individual songs. The winning song is guaranteed a (live) feature performance at a premium NYC cabaret venue! And there are rumors of a trophy…

For most rounds, contestants will have just one week to write their songs. They will then have a week off from writing while the company produces song demos. Episode tapings will be held on Sunday mornings sometime between the hours of 8a-12p EDT (via Zoom; meeting duration: approximately 2 hrs), the following Sundays:
4/12, 4/19, 5/3, 5/17, 6/7, 6/21

As they work on their songs, teams are allowed to determine their own work schedules. However, at least one member of each competing team must be present during episode tapings (see dates below). With this in mind, please include in your application any anticipated scheduling conflicts with these dates. A certain degree of flexibility is usually possible, and we strive to accommodate various schedules and time zones!
