* As a 29-hour reading, all the rehearsals and performances will be held within 29 hours over 2 weeks.
Compensation & Eligibility
Actors will receive a stipend of a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $500, depending on fundraising.
Submission Details
Please submit your resume, headshot, a two-minute contemporary dramatic monologue, and a video of a 32-bar singing selection.
To audition, please fill out the Google Form attached to the bottom of this listing. The team will be accepting submissions until the form is closed. In-person callbacks are planned to be held on March 23 – 25. We will reach out to schedule.
SYNOPSIS:
SINGING LESSONS follows Miles, neuroscience PhD student, who is studying Australian Zebra Finches and how they learn to sing. However, his subject, Teal 53, has stopped singing. Miles then embarks on a journey of birds, songs, and a leading a group of misfits as they all try to figure out the songs that were passed down to them, and if they compose their own songs - one that will reflect who they are at their core.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
• MILES (Mid-twenties/Male-presenting /Tenor) - Miles is a neuroscience PhD who has defied his troubled upbringing to get to where he is today. But now feeling out of place with his resume-stuffed colleagues around him, he starts to wonder what about his upbringing has affected him to feel so out of place.
• TEAL (18 Years Old/Male-presenting/Tenor) - Queer teenager who recently ran away from home. He aspires to be a musician and was ready to start his life years ago and is now taking matters into his own hands.
• JUNE (Mid-twenties/Female-presenting/Soprano) - Someone who is deeply in tune with birds and the woods, June is an idealist and naturist who is also serious and practical. She's here to save lives.
• SHAINA/CHORUS (20's/Female-presenting/Soprano) - Someone who is in the music world and ready to create a party scene
• NURA/CHORUS (30's/Female-presenting/Alto) - Serious academic, she's spent years working to get her professorial position and sacrificed a lot to get to where she is professionally.
• SIMON/CHORUS (mid-twenties/Male-Presenting/Tenor) - Works hard, serious, but also does not want to get emotionally tied to the work around him.
• DENNIS/CHORUS (50's/Male-presenting/Baritone) - Miles's father. He has spent a lot of his life avoiding the responsibilities he should have taken on.
