DESCRIPTION

The American Playwriting Foundation (APF), a program of Building for the Arts (BFA), administers the annual Relentless Award, the largest cash prize in American theater awarded to a playwright or writing team in recognition of a new play or musical. The program also holds readings and workshops and connects theatrical collaborators.

BFA is seeking a full-time Production Manager for APF. The Production Manager is a member of the American Playwriting Foundation program team. Successful candidates are enthusiastic about theatre and have significant interest and experience in technical theatre and managing the production process. Some operations or facilities experience is a plus.

This is a 40 hour/week, salaried, non-exempt position. The Production Manager reports to the APF Artistic Producer and Associate Director and is responsible for overseeing, planning, facilitating, and coordinating the technical aspects of APF’s internal and public facing programming; they will also act as primary liaison between APF and Theatre Row’s production team. Theatre Row is a separate program of BFA.

Evening and weekend hours will be required and some flexibility in scheduling should be expected dependent on production staffing needs.

Responsibilities of the Production Manager include but are not limited to:

Supervision:

Serve as head of production for Relentless productions of all scales and collaborate with Theatre Row production management team.

Serve as primary point of contact to external teams (i.e. partner organizations/project, guest artists, etc.) collaborating with APF.

Manage a year-round calendar for The American Playwriting Foundation, allowing all employees to appropriately plan readings, salons, potential seasons of production, donor and subscriber events, fundraisers, and galas, with clear reference to all other happenings.

In collaboration with APF Artistic Producer and Associate Director (subject to review by the APF Artistic Director), create and manage budgets for all production-related programmatic activity.

Facilitate recruitment and hiring of any necessary production/technical staff (i.e. project-based overhires such as stage managers, designers, technicians, or production assistants) when required.

New Work Development:

Coordinate and collaborate with Theatre Row team to schedule spaces for rehearsals, private, and public presentations.

Coordinate and collaborate with APF creatives to facilitate any technical/design/logistical needs that artists may require.

Supply creatives with comprehensive instructions and guidance for the preparation and execution of readings, specifically resources available (and not available) to the teams (director, playwright, actors, stage manager, if applicable).

Confirm necessary set-up materials and timing for rehearsals and readings (chairs, tables, lightings instruments, audio support) and facilitate the procurement and set up of materials.

Provide security lists for any events with guests (including artists).

Required Qualifications:

2+ years of production and technical theatre experience

Have a working knowledge of standard theatrical lighting and sound equipment including ETC products, QLab, and analog Sound Mixers.

Proficient problem-solving skills and attentiveness to detail

Excellent time management skills, including managing competing projects and timelines

Commitment to current best Health and Safety practices

Sound computer skills including Microsoft Office

Ability to remain mobile for long periods (4+ hours) of time

Ability to lift 50 lbs,

Ability and willingness to work at heights on ladders and operate genie lifts

Preferred Qualifications:

1+ years experience running a production team or production related efforts

Basic knowledge of computer drafting programs (AutoCAD, Vectorworks)

Experience working in a multi-venue theatre

Experience/familiarity with theatrical contracts and unions (AEA, SDC, etc)

General knowledge of NYC commercial and non-profit theatres & producers

Compensation: Salary is $50,000 - $60,000 commensurate with experience.
