PORTLAND PLAYHOUSE 2026 - 2027 SEASON
Portland Playhouse does not discriminate against any employee, volunteer or customer on the basis or race, color, cultural heritage, national origin, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, size, mental or physical dis/ability or appearance, genetic status, marital status, political affiliation, source of income, veteran status or any other status protected under local, state, or federal law.
A note about casting (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Traquin of Actors Theatre of Louisville):
Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.
Table 17
By Douglas Lyons
Directed by Charles Grant
SPT 7; Projected minimum: $697/week (10 weeks)
First Rehearsal: August 25th, 2026
First Preview: September 30th, 2026
Opening: October 3rd, 2026
Closing: November 1st, 2026
SEEKING:
JADA - Black woman. Late 20’s - Early 30’s. A magnetic and comedic spirit. When she enters a room, heads turn. Though quick-witted and strong, her pride is her downfall. She evokes a Janet Jackson like smile, mixed with Sanaa Lathan’s ingenue charisma.
DALLAS - Black man. Late 20’s - Early 30’s. Driven, charming, and hardworking. He’s smooth with his words and passionate with his love. Sometimes he’s so focused, he forgets to take care of home. Dallas evokes Taye Digg’s suave nature mixed with Will Smith’s (Fresh Prince) goofy energy.
RIVER, ERIC, BARTENDER - Black man. Late 20’s - Early 30’s. River is queer, cunty, and bitterly single. He’s hilarious, both to the audience and himself. Behind his snippy exterior is a huge hopeless romantic. Eric exudes confidence without trying. He’s a straight forward, cocky flirt - with long-term commitment issues. Eric evokes that Morris Chestnut/Shemar Moore smooth operate energy. Bartender is a total muscle bro douchebag. He’s so sure of himself it makes you wanna vomit. Happily single, he swears he knows a woman’s needs before she even opens her mouth.
