Breakdown

NEWARK

White Horse Theater Company is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing and developing American plays. There will be one all-day rehearsal on Friday, June 5th and a pick-up rehearsal prior to the presentation the afternoon of Saturday, June 6th. The show runs about 75 minutes, and there will be a short 20-30 min talk-back afterwards.


SYNOPSIS: Star singer Dorcas “Dor” Johnson visits The Toucan Club in Newark where she got her start and looks back at her life, her challenges, and her path to success with the nightclub's workers and band coming together to relive her story with her.


SEEKING:

DORCAS “DOR” JOHNSON (she/her, Black, 40s, mezzo-soprano) - Internationally renowned vocalist from Newark, NJ. Strong, confident, charismatic; facing the greatest challenge of her life.

BAND LEADER (he/him, Black, 20s-30s, high baritone) - The nightclub's MC and band leader; Doubles as Booker Blevins and Kirk Merricks, Dor's lovers/business managers. Charming, energetic, passionate, persuasive. A proficient guitarist.

SAMANTHA (she/her, Black, 18, mezzo-soprano with high belt) - Back-up singer in the club's band. Aspiring, headstrong, yet conflicted about her career path. Doubles as Dor's daughter, Taylor.

CHARLIE (he/him, Black, 20s-40s, baritone) - Drummer of the band. A bit of a complainer and a sourpuss. A real drummer who can sing and handle some light scene work.

AL (he/him, Black, 20s-40s, baritone) - Pianist of the band. Playful, positive. A real pianist who can sing and handle some light scene work.

BASS PLAYER (he/him, Black, 20s-40s, baritone) - Bass player in the band. A flirt, simple. A real bassist who can sing and handle some light scene work.
