BREAKDOWN

LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION!

This production contains brief full male nudity and simulated sexual situations. Nudity is limited to specific scenes and will be staged with consent-based practices. An intimacy director will be engaged for rehearsals and performances involving intimacy.

Note: All roles are written as gay men. John and James are identical twins and will be played by the same actor. All actors should be comfortable with being nude on stage.

Setting: Lakeside home, upstate New York | Time: Contemporary (1990s)


SEEKING:

GREGORY: 40s–60s. Renowned choreographer and host. Brilliant, witty, controlling, emotionally guarded; masks fear of illness and vulnerability with intellect and humor. Dance skills preferred but not required.

BOBBY: 30s–40s. Gregory’s partner. Blind. Compassionate, perceptive, emotionally generous; the moral and emotional center of the play.

JOHN / JAMES: 30s–early 50s. Identical twins. John: A composer and the dance accompanist for Gregory’s company; sensual, confident, impulsive. James: Gentle, introspective; living with AIDS; emotionally open and courageous. One actor will play both roles.

RAMON: Late 20s–40s. Construction worker and aspiring dancer in Gregory’s company. Handsome, proud, guarded; struggles with intimacy and trust. The role requires full nudity in several scenes.

ARTHUR: 30s–50s. Shy, socially awkward accountant, Perry's partner of 14 years; earnest, inexperienced, yearning for connection.

PERRY: 40s–50s. Arthur’s partner. Confident, emotionally grounded businessman; challenges Arthur to claim independence and self-worth.

BUZZ: Late 30s–50s. Cynical, abrasive lawyer. Biting wit masks fear, loneliness, and vulnerability; volatile but deeply human.
