Salary: The base pay rate is set by the current IATSE Local 15 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) contract rate, currently at $45.27 + 14% ($51.60).

Benefits: Benefits are provided through Local 15 according to the terms of the CBA.

Work Locations: Downtown Seattle. The 5th Avenue Theatre auditorium and production spaces are located within the Skinner Building. This role will also be required for occasional off-site travel, including but not limited to the build shop and/or warehouse, both located in South Seattle.

Position Summary

The Head Carpenter works in collaboration with the Technical Direction team to supervise and facilitate load-ins and load-outs, technical rehearsals, and the run of touring productions, special events, and shows produced by The Fifth Avenue Theatre Association. This role ensures all work is executed safely and within established time and budget constraints.

The Head Carpenter serves as a lead for Production Department Heads and over-hire crew, coordinates staffing through the IATSE Local 15 dispatch system, and ensures additional staffing requests are processed and communicated in a timely manner. As a working member of the run crew, the Head Carpenter leads by example and maintains a safe working environment for cast and company members.

This position is responsible for processing payroll for IATSE Local 15 workers and typically works evenings and weekends in alignment with the performance schedule, with frequent overtime required during technical rehearsals.

This position is represented by IATSE, Local No. 15.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Technical Direction team and other departments to determine appropriate staffing and schedules for tours, special events, maintenance, and productions, ensuring alignment with the approved budget.

  • Act as a lead of Production Department union crew including builders, carpenters, electricians, props, sound, and sub-departments that fall under these categories during all phases of productions and special events.

  • Work with the Technical Director in advancing tours that are presented by The Fifth Avenue Theatre Association.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues that arise during planning, build, load-in, technical rehearsals, and changeovers in collaboration with the Technical Direction team, Production Carpenter, Head Builder, and other department heads, and communicate solutions to appropriate staff.

  • Work with the Technical Direction team, Production Carpenter, and other affected departments to generate and manage drawings and documents.

  • Work with IATSE Local 15 dispatch system to fill additional labor requirements for events associated with The 5th Avenue Theatre Association.

  • Attend meetings, run-throughs, technical and dress rehearsals, previews and performances as required to execute the production.

  • Enforce established theatre safety policies while identifying and reporting potential workplace hazards to the appropriate personnel to prevent accidents.

  • Accurately process weekly payroll of IATSE Local 15 workers within the designated time frame.

  • Comply with the policies and procedures of The 5th Avenue Theatre Association, including personnel rules and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Maintain a calm and cool manner when dealing with stressful situations and approaching deadlines.

  • Model and support the mission and values of The 5th Avenue Theatre Association.

Essential Knowledge and Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will possess most of these skills and qualifications, or relevant experience and achievements to help them meet the needs of the role.

  • At least five years of experience leading, directing, and delegating tasks to union crews and project management from preproduction, load-in, technical rehearsals, run and load-out.

  • Extensive practice working under collective bargaining agreements in theatrical environments and interpreting language to make sure agreements are honored and appropriately implemented.

  • History of working with organizations which produce new works, remounts, and reimagined productions utilizing a variety of components such as stock elements, rental pieces, and custom fabricated units.

  • Experience advancing tours and bringing them into venues in an expedited manner while maintaining safe working conditions and staying on schedule.

  • A comprehensive understanding of theatrical safety practices to ensure personal and collective safety while operating within the theatre, shop, and warehouse environments.

  • Familiarity with working in theatrical venues with a counterweight fly system, understanding the components and the principles of how that system operates.

  • History of working on productions utilizing automation to move scenic elements and a strong understanding of elements utilized in executing those actions. Experience working with Creative Conners automated systems is preferred.

  • Proficiency in reading, understanding, and interpreting designer and technical drawings in order to assemble and install complicated theatrical scenic elements.

  • Proficiency with packing, loading, and unloading box trucks and 53-foot trailers and working around forklifts.

  • Experience safely working with various personnel lifts, ladders, and safety gear associated with overhead work.

  • Expertise in task switching, leading multiple projects simultaneously, and time management skills to complete tasks on tight and stressful schedules.

  • Relevant experience processing payroll for large crews that fall under a collective bargaining agreement.

  • Current working knowledge of software such as Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel) on a Windows computer.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (fluency in English is required).

  • A strong sense of fairness and aptitude in dealing with issues pertaining to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Successful candidates will engage in collegial, collaborative, and positive interactions with designers, directors, stage managers, and staff across multiple departments, demonstrating strong interpersonal diplomacy, clear communication skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Special Considerations
Work schedule varies with the production schedule and includes overtime, evening, and weekend hours.

  • Ability to perform administrative tasks using a computer, such as creating and reviewing documents, entering data, and communicating electronically. This may involve sitting at a workstation for extended periods and can be done using a keyboard, mouse, or assistive technology.

  • Ability to communicate in person with colleagues across a multi-level facility (including offices, theater, basement, alley, and workshop spaces). This may involve moving between spaces with varied lighting and sound, or asking others to come to a central office location as needed.

  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity and fine motor control, and to lift, pull, push, and carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. This work may involve climbing ladders, working at heights, standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive physical tasks during load-ins, strikes, and technical rehearsals.

  • The 5th Avenue Theatre is located in the historic Skinner Building and is non-ADA compliant. This role must be able to navigate the backstage, basement, alleyway and stage door areas without significant assistance.
