A Head Carpenter is responsible for overseeing all scenic construction, installation, and maintenance for a theatrical production.

Pre-Production & Planning

  • Collaborating with the Scenic Designer, Director, and Production Manager to realize the scenic design

  • Interpreting scenic drawings, models, and technical specifications

  • Developing construction plans, build schedules, and budgets

  • Creating material lists, cost estimates, and purchase orders

  • Engineering scenic elements to ensure structural integrity and safety

Scenic Construction & Installation

  • Supervising the construction of sets, platforms, flats, stairs, and scenic units

  • Overseeing load-ins, installations, rigging, and alignment of scenery

  • Ensuring scenic elements function as designed (moving scenery, traps, wagons, automation if applicable)

  • Troubleshooting mechanical or structural issues

  • Maintaining shop tools, equipment, and workspaces

Crew Leadership & Management

  • Hiring, training, and supervising carpenters and scenic crew with assistance from the Lead Producer

  • Assigning daily tasks and managing build and load-in schedules

  • Coordinating scenic crew calls for load-ins, installations, build, etc

Rehearsals & Performances

  • Attending technical rehearsals to address scenic notes

  • Ensuring scenery remains safe, stable, and show-ready throughout the run

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensuring compliance with OSHA standards, local building codes, and venue policies

  • Conducting risk assessments for scenic elements and movement

Post-Production

  • Supervising strike and load-out of scenic elements

  • Ensuring proper storage, disposal, or return of materials

  • Completing build documentation and post-show reports if needed

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Advanced carpentry and scenic construction skills

  • Strong leadership and crew management abilities

  • Ability to read technical drawings and engineer scenic solutions

  • Excellent problem-solving and time management skills

  • Knowledge of rigging, automation basics, and scenic materials
