Breakdown

CAMPING

SEEKING:

ARI: (woman) Age Range in Play: 15 years old, 18 years old, 22 years old, 30 years old, 37 years old. Ari is Brit’s best friend. They were born at the same hospital, they have a joke about their moms giving birth on the same bed, 2 months apart. It’s the blood, they’ll say. There were tiny microscopic parts of our blood mixed together before we even met. Ari’s journey begins with a desperate longing to fit in. To do that, she takes her cues from her best friend Brit, who she loves uncontrollably. When she makes the decision to apply for college behind Brit’s back, it’s a bit like severing a limb yourself without anesthetic. When she gets accepted to a full-ride scholarship and leaves Brit behind in their hometown, it’s a bit like someone threw that limb in the trash without asking you first. At Ohio University she meets new and beautiful and impressive women, and Tom. Tom has money. Ari never had that. Brit didn’t either, actually. What will these college folks think when they meet Brit? Will they see Ari differently? Will they know that she has always, always been hopelessly in love with her? When Ari marries Tom, when they have two children, when Ari finds herself so completely utterly alone, she finds herself moving back home for the first time since graduating college. Brit’s there. Brit will always be there. But no matter how much Ari begs, Brit will never leave with her.

BRIT: (woman) Age Range in Play: 15 years old, 18 years old, 22 years old, 30 years old, 37 years old. Brit is Ari’s best friend. Brit just doesn’t want to be a virgin anymore. People at school have started to talk about her and Ari in ways that make her feel sick to her stomach. The summer after high school, one of the many they’ve spent together, Ari lets Brit know that she’s leaving. There’s nothing quite like the pit of loneliness that is trying to continue into adulthood without your best friend. Following Ari out of town, though, would mean admitting something that she’s spent their entire life denying. An unplanned pregnancy means Brit marries the boy who was a year ahead of them in high school. Means that Brit continues working at the local dive bar. Brit wants so so much more, and the only person she could ever admit that to won’t stay.
